Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth.
This treatment is only required when it is clear that the soft tissue at the centre of the tooth has been damaged by decay or injury which could lead to a bacterial infection. Your dentist can check this by taking X-rays of your teeth to highlight any problems.
Root canal treatment is carried out by your dentist over one or two appointments. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infections from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. This type of treatment is normally carried out under local anaesthetic.
