DENTAL IMPLANTS

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are the most advanced way to replace missing teeth. Dental implants not only look natural but function like your own teeth. With dental implants, you will have permanent teeth which are fixed in place. You will be able to chew, bite, speak and laugh just like you did with natural teeth.

An implant is made up of an artificial titanium root that is fixed to the jawbone and fuses with the surrounding bone and acts as a tooth root, this helps reduce further bone loss. When integrated a crown or bridge is attached to fill any gaps. Implants are also used to support dentures to improve their function and stay in place.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants offer a long term solution which can last between 20-30 years however they can last up to a lifetime with regular dental check-ups and good maintenance.

Implant consultation

Your implant consultation will be with our implant surgeon which will include a clinical examination and impressions for study models to help with diagnostics. We may also refer you for a digital CT scan.

You will be given pre-surgery and post-surgery instructions. The treatment plan, pricing and any risks will be explained in detail and you will have a chance to ask any questions or concerns you have as we want you to feel comfortable and know all aspects of your treatment.

From the assessment, the implant surgeon will calculate the optimum size and position of your dental implant. If this demonstrates that the underlying bone is deficient a simple bone regeneration procedure will be recommended. Each case is different so if at any point you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your treatment.

FAQs

Here are answers to the most popular questions we get from patients interested in getting Dental Implants:

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  • Implants are fixed in place and look and perform almost like natural teeth
  • Implants fit precisely without slipping or the need for adhesives
  • Implants preserve facial features, and restore a natural smile
  • Implants avoid damage to surrounding healthy teeth
  • Implants prevent loss of bone in the area of the missing teeth
  • Implants improve your appearance, your confidence, and your ability to eat the foods you like without worry about your teeth
  • Implants can last a lifetime

Am I too old to have implants?

Age is not a factor for dental implant success. Bone healing around dental implants occurs in patients from the 6th to the 10th decade of life with almost equal success as in younger patients. The only thing to stand in the way of dental implant treatment in the elderly is general medical health, your dental professional can discuss this with you at your consultation.

How painful is the dental implant procedure?

This procedure, as any other oral surgical procedure, has some associated discomfort. However most implant patients comment that they were surprised at how minimal and short the duration of discomfort was.

How long will my implant last?

Dental implants are designed to last for a lifetime. You can keep your dental implant in good condition by practicing good oral hygiene at home and by visiting our office regularly for preventive care. Please remember that while the implant itself may remain firmly anchored in your mouth, you may need to replace the restoration at some point in the future if it breaks or wears out.

What are the disadvantages of dental implants?

Like any minor oral surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection, inflammation, and pain, but your prosthodontist will discuss how these can be managed for your specific situation. If there is no available bone to place the implant, then bone and gum grafting procedures may be required, which can increase the cost of your treatment. However, the upfront investment can pay off in the long term.
